National geographic magazine has described Kumarakom as one of the must visit places in a lifetime.

This backwater destination has attracted World leaders like previous Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to royalties like Prince Charles of England . In this serene village with backwaters Prince Charles celebrated his birthday. The night cruise in the houseboat and the cultural programs in the houseboats are really extraordinary experiences.

History of  Kumarakom

  1. Initially Kumarakom was ruled by the Thekkumkoor royal family
  2. In later part of 19th century an Englishman Henry Baker purchased the land from Raja of Travancore who ruled it 
  3. Henry Baker built a grand home there
  4. In 1962 that property was sold to Taj group and they converted it into a resort
  5. Kumarakom village became first village in Kerala to launch responsible tourism practices in 2008
