The monument was built by Mughal emperor Shahjahan in the memory of his deceased wife Mumtaz Mahal.
History of Taj Mahal
- The construction started Mughal emperor Shahjahan on 1631 by and ended by 1653
- For construction over 1,000 elephants were used to transport building materials. It took the efforts of 22,000 labourers, painters, embroidery artists and stone cutters to shape the Taj Mahal
- In 19th century British government in India changed the landscaping in front of Taj Mahal
- The then British viceroy Lord Curzon ordered a sweeping restoration project, which was completed in 1908
- 28 types of precious jewels were set on marble during the construction

Air
The closest domestic and international airport to Agra is at Delhi, the Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is well-linked with all prime Indian and foreign destinations.
Rail
As Agra is located in the middle of main the following train lines: Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai, it is quite easy to reach here by train from anywhere. Cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Gwalior, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai are well-connected to Agra with regular trains
Road
Agra is well connected by state and roadways buses to several cities and towns like Delhi, Gwalior, Kanpur, Lucknow and Jaipur. There are basically two prime bus terminals in Agra, namely Idgah Bus Stand and ISBT and buses here are available for all major destinations. Those driving from Delhi to Agra can take NH 2 route while those travelling from Jaipur can take NH 11 road. The recently constructed Delhi-Agra Taj Expressway has reduced travel time to the city substantially, making the drive itself highly pleasurable.
Climate
During summer, the daytime temperature hovers around 46-50 °C. Nights are relatively cooler and temperature lowers to a comfortable 30 °C. Winters are bit chilly but are the best time to visit Agra. The minimum temperature sometimes goes as low as -2 or -2.5 °C but usually hovers in the range of 6 to 8 °C
