Amsterdam – Venice of the North

 

Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk.

History

  1. Amsterdam was founded as a fishing village around the thirteenth century.
  2.  During the 14th, but especially the 15th century, Amsterdam underwent a rapid development, which laid the foundation for the Golden Age.
  3. On 12 March 1345, the miracle of Amsterdam occurred and Amsterdam became an important pilgrimage town. 
  4. The end of the 19th century is sometimes called Amsterdam’s second Golden Age. New museums, the Centraal Station and the Concertgebouw were built.
  5. The cultural revolution of the 1960s and 1970s made Amsterdam the magisch centrum (magical centre) of Europe.
