Kanyakumari – the confluence of three oceans and home to a 3000 years old temple

Kanyakumari is a coastal town in the state of Tamil Nadu on India’s southern tip. Jutting into the Laccadive Sea, the town was known as Cape Comorin during British rule and is popular for watching sunrise and sunset over the ocean. It’s also a noted pilgrimage site

History of Kanyakumari for tourists and tour operators

  1. Mythological place where  Lord Hanumandropped a piece of earth as he was carrying a mountain with his life-saving herb, Mrita Sanjivani, from the Himalayas to Lanka
  2.  Through St. Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles of Christ, Christianity arrived in this area in AD 52
  3.  In 1656, the Dutch East India company conquered Portuguese Ceylon from the Portuguese, and Kanyakumari came under their reign. The name eventually corrupted to “Comorin” 
  4. it also landed up in the hands of the Venad rulers, in the year 1741. The Maharaja, Marthanda Varma, defeated the East India Company after fighting a battle here
  5. After the formation of Indian state Kerala from the earstwhile Venad, Kanyakumari became part of Indian state Tamil Nadu
  6. In 1952 Gandhiji’s shes were brought to Kanyakumari
