Varkala- Upcoming beach destination sought out by backpackers and redemption seekers

Varkala is a coastal town which attracts tourists and pilgrims. If you’re looking for beaches and are fed up with the crowds and prices at Kovalam, then its well worth checking out Varkala. Varkala is a new place to hang out in India and has only recently been developed as a tourist destination.

History

  1. It is believed that when a group of pilgrims approached Sage Narada and told him that they had sinned, Narada threw his valkalam (a loin cloth made from the bark of a tree) and it landed at this scenic village
  2.   Narada told the pilgrims to pray for their redemption at Papanasam, which literally means redemption from sins
  3.  Janardhana Temple near Varkala cliff is almost 2000 years old.
  4. Udaya Marathanda Varma, a Travancore king in 1762 built rows of houses in the obscure sea side village of Varkala in order to make the local Brahmins settle here

Varkala is at a distance of 9 km from National Highway 66. Private buses and KSRTC buses ply through NH 66 and Varkala. State Highway 64 (Kerala) starts in Varkala and ends in Madathara.
