The most visited attraction in Mysuru is the Mysuru Palace (Amba Vilas Palace). It attracts millions of tourists every year and is one of the most popular heritage sites in India, second only to the Taj Mahal in terms of visitor count. The palace boasts a rich royal history and stunning architecture, featuring majestic domes, arched corridors, stained glass ceilings, and intricate carvings.

A major highlight is its illumination with over 100,000 lights, creating a breathtaking spectacle every Sunday and during the Dasara festival. The palace also hosts a Light & Sound Show daily at 7:00 PM, except on Sundays and public holidays. Inside, visitors can explore the legendary Golden Throne, jewel-studded doors, royal costumes, and exquisite paintings. The palace complex also houses several ancient temples, some dating back to the 14th century. Visitors can explore the palace daily from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Chamundi Hills & Chamundeshwari Temple

Chamundi Hill is a serene getaway from the city’s hustle and bustle. Located at 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level, the hill offers stunning panoramic views of Mysuru. From the viewpoint, you can see the Mysuru Palace, Karanji Lake, and the entire city skyline.

At the top of the hill is the Chamundeshwari Temple, dating back over 1,000 years and built during the rule of the Wodeyars. Visitors can either drive up the hill or climb 1,008 steps to reach the temple. The trek is especially enjoyable in the early morning when the weather is cool.

Mysuru Zoo and Brindavan Gardens

The Mysuru Zoo is one of the oldest and most well-maintained zoos in India. Spread across 157 acres, it houses over 150 species of animals, birds, and reptiles, providing a natural and spacious habitat. A complete tour of the zoo takes a few hours but is well worth the effort.

The Brindavan Gardens is one of the most symmetrical and well-maintained gardens in India. It is a great spot to enjoy cool breezes and scenic views. The gardens feature a mesmerizing fountain show with dancing lights and synchronized music, best viewed in the evening after sunset when the lights illuminate the landscape.

Jaganmohan Palace & Art Gallery houses an impressive collection of paintings and artifacts. St. Philomena’s Church is one of the largest churches in India. The Railway Museum and Folklore Museum are great places to explore history. The Regional Museum of Natural History is an excellent stop for kids and nature lovers. Located about 80 km from Mysuru, Shivanasamudra Waterfalls offers a breathtaking sight and is perfect for photography.

Srirangapatna, about 15 km from Mysuru, is a historic town that was the stronghold of Tipu Sultan. The Srirangapatna Fort is a massive fort with strong walls and secret passages. The spot where Tipu Sultan fell in battle is marked here. Daria Daulat Bagh is a palace with stunning architecture and murals depicting Tipu Sultan’s life. The Gumbaz Mausoleum, built in a grand Persian style, is the tomb of Tipu Sultan, his father Hyder Ali, and his mother Fakr-Un-Nisa.
