Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu festival . It is celebrated annually in honor of Lord Shiva, marking the day of the marriage of Shiva with Parvati. One of the largest Shivaratri celebrations in India happens in Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. The town is called “Varanasi of hills” and millions gather to celebrate Shivarati including international tourists.

History of Shivaratri celebrations at Mandi

The Shivaratri celebrations was started by then ruler Ishawri Sen during 18^th century once he was released from being a war prisoner
Other deities in the state were invited to take part in Shivratri celebrations making it a grand event
Raja Ajbar Sen who ruled Mandi in 16^th century built the Bhoothnath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva ( Mahadev)
Before 1664 Royal Shivaratri was celebrated where the public had no access
Post Indian independence in 1947 the administration started inviting more deities to take part in the Shivratri celebrations
