History

1. Records going far back reveal that the peninsula was associated with maritime trade a since ancient times . It was called Arasadi then
2. It was first colonised by the Portuguese in early 17th Century. 
3. The arrival of the Dutch eventually resulted in the ousting of the Portuguese from here and elsewhere in the island.
4. Dutch commenced construction of a fort in 1667, which was completed in 1676
5. In 1795 the fort was surrendered to the British. The British continued with their military occupation of the Kalpitiya Fort till 1859
