Ho Chi Minh City (commonly known as Saigon) is a city in southern Vietnam famous for the pivotal role it played in the Vietnam War. It’s also known for its French colonial landmarks, including Notre-Dame Cathedral, made entirely of materials imported from France, and the 19th-century Central Post Office

History

The earliest settlement in the area was a Funan temple at the location of the current Phung Son Pagoda, founded in the 4th century AD
In 1623, King Chey Chettha II of Cambodia (1618–28) allowed Vietnamese refugees fleeing the Trịnh–Nguyễn civil war in Vietnam to settle in the area and it was renamedSaigon
Colonized by France and Spain in 1859, the city was influenced by the French and a number of classical Western-style buildings and French villas in the city reflect this
The Viet Minh proclaimed the independence of Vietnam in 1945 after a combined occupation by Vichy France and Japan
At the conclusion of the Vietnam War on 30 April 1975, the city came under the control of the Vietnamese People’s Army and renamed to Ho Chi Minh city
