Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948 in the compound of Birla House (now Gandhi Smriti) . Birla House was formerly the house of noted industrialist Ghanshyam Das Birla. The home where Mahatma Gandhi spent his last 144 days is now a museum  attracting visitors from around the world

History of  Gandhi Smriti

  1. The 12-bedroom Birla house was built in 1928 by Ghanshyamdas Birla
  2. On 30 th January 1945, after 5pm, Mahatma Gandhi was going to attend the daily multi faith prayer meeting when he was assassinated
  3. From that time onward it became a site frequented by Gandhians and Gandhi admirers
  4. The Martyr’s Column  in the compound marks the place where Gandhi, the “Father of the Nation” was assassinated
  5. Birla House opened for the public on 15 August 1973, renamed the Gandhi Smriti

  2. Visit Gandhi Samadhi nearby where his mortal remains were cremated
