Ochira Kali a martial arts festival in Kerala (15th and 16th June 2020)

Ochira temple is a unique temple dedicated to Parabrahma ( Universal Consciousness ). The annual Oachira Kali festival is celebrated on 1st and 2nd of Malayalam month Midhunam. Fighters from 52 karas ( regions) gather under asans / gurus at the padanilam or battlefield and engage in a mock battle.

Due to Corona this year only namesake rituals will be conducted participating minimum people.

History

1. Ambalappuzha and Kayamkulam Kings fought wars 200 years ago
2. Oachira Kali commemorates those wars fought
3. It started as a war exercise of Kayamkulam king
4. Kayamkulam king felicitated Brahmins knowing Danurveda during this festival

Rituals

1. First day on the sight of Brahminy Kite the rituals starts
2. Second day after noon mock battle happens
3. Kalaripayattu training of the kids is initiated

Techniques and costume:

1. Thousands gather in two groups in water clogged filed
2. The movements on the rhythm of drum beats
3. When one side advances, the other retreats and vice versa
4. Steps based on Kalaripayattu steps
5. Soldiers attire & sticks / canes and shield instead of swords

Nearest railway station is Kayamkulam junction 6 kms away. Trains are available to major destinations in India like:
