Weapons used in Kalaripayattu

There are different weapons ( both wooden and metal) used in Kalaripayattu training. The usage of weapons are trained during the advance phases of Kalaripayattu training. Some of the weapons commonly used in Kalaripayattu are:

1.Urumi

Its whip like flexible sword. Both the sides of the blade has sharp edges making it a lethal weapon.

2.Churika

A short sword with double edges

3.Kuntham

Kuntham means spear in Malayalam. Normally it will be having a wodden handle and sharp metal edge at one end

4.Kathi

Kathi means knife. The fighter may have knife in one hand or both hands. The when someone fights with the Knife, a cloth is used as the weapon for blocking.

5. Otta

An S shaped sharp wooden staff. It will have sharp edge at one end.

6.Nedu Vadi

Vadi means stick in Malayalam. Sticks of different length will be used in Kalaripayattu.

Neduvadi ( long stick) of bamboo usually 2 meters long

7.Kuru Vadi

Kuru vadi is a small stick. It is usually muchan ( three hands span) long

9.Kattara

Kattara is a dagger. Normally the length will be six angulam ( length of finger)

10. Gaddah

Gaddah is a mace. Usually made of wood
