Theyyam is thousands of years old ritual of God dance in Northern Kerala. The performer is assumed to attain the status of God and devotees seek blessings.

History of Theyyam

1. Legends attributes the origin of Theyyam to Lord Parasuram

2. According to archaeologist Raymond Alchin, Theyyam could have originated on earliest periods of Neolithic settlement

3. During Sangam period (6th century BCE to 3rd century CE) the Velan community got prominence in performing Theyyam

4. Over the period Shaktism, Saivism and Vaishnavism influenced Theyyam

There are about 456 types of Theyyam(theyyakkolams), among which 112 are famous.Some of the famous Theyyams are:

Theyyam is daily performed at Muthappan temple at Parassinikkadavu, Kannur. Some of the popular places where annual Theyyam Festival is held

When to watch Theyyam

Temples have annual festivals and Theyyam performances during Malayalam months of Dhanu and Makaram. So ideal time to visit Kerala for seeing Theyyam will be between months of January to March. Before coming verify the Gregorian calendar dates with your travel agents.
