Phuket – Pearl of Andaman

Phuket, a rainforested, mountainous island in the Andaman Sea, has some of Thailand’s most popular beaches, mainly situated along the clear waters of the western shore.

History
1. Fernao Mendses Pinto was one of the first European explorers to detail Phuket in his travel accounts during 1545
2. In the 17th century, the Dutch, English and, after the 1680s, the French, competed for the opportunity to trade with the island of Phuket (then known as “Jung Ceylon”)
3. In 1685, King Narai confirmed the French tin monopoly in Phuket to their ambassador, the Chevalier de Chaumon
4. Eventhough Burmeses captured Phuket, they were forced to retreat on 13 March 1785 due to resistance lead by two women  Than Phu Ying Chan and  and her sister Mook

Air
The Phuket International Airport is the second busiest airport of Thailand after the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.  The airport is well-connected to Bangkok with daily flights. There are also direct flights to India, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Germany, among other countries

Train

Phun Phin railway station in Bangkok to Singapore railway line is the nearest railway station. Its 222 kms (5 hours) away

Road
Buses to other regions of Thailand including Bangkok, Krabi, Phang Na and Surat Thani operate at the BKS terminal located just off Thanon Phang Nga in Phuket Town. Buses from the Southern Bus Terminal of Bangkok to Phuket are the most reliable and convenient way of travelling between the two cities and take up to 13 hours to reach Phuket
