New York – The big Apple

New York City comprises 5 boroughs sitting where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its iconic sites include skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and sprawling Central Park. Broadway theater is staged in neon-lit Times Square.

History

In the precolonial era, the area of present-day New York City was inhabited by Algonquian Native Americans
The first documented visit into New York Harbor by a European was in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Florentine explorer in the service of the French crown
In 1609, the English explorer Henry Hudson rediscovered the New York Harbor
In 1898, the modern City of New York was formed with the consolidation of Brooklyn , the County of New York , the County of Richmond, and the western portion of the County of Queens
New York became the most populous urbanized area in the world in the early 1920s, overtaking London.

Air
